Perhaps you are, like I am, an ice cream addict. But one cup of ice cream can contain more fat than a burger or a piece of pizza.
How would you like to have homemade ice cream taste and texture with the added bonus of all those EAAs and BCAAs? You can. All you need to do is make whey protein ice cream!
Don’t have an ice cream freezer? That’s okay, too. After all, what does an ice cream freezer actually do? It freezes and churns the mixture that will be ice cream, right? And there are several ways to do that.
The Recipe for Whey Protein Ice Cream
- All you need are two ingredients. Just two. Greek yogurt and whey protein. Make sure it is really Greek yogurt, though, and not just Greek style yogurt. There is a difference!
- Mix them together and then put them in the freezer. Churn it with a fork every 30 minutes and then put it back in the freezer. Keep doing this until you have the consistency of ice cream (4 or 5 times). Smooth, healthy, and completely satisfying, you’ll love it.
- Add a mashed banana for banana ice cream. Melt a chunk of chocolate and pour it over the ice cream. It will immediately harden into a delicious hard shell. Try other flavors of whey or yogurt, or add in nuts for a real delight.
Other ways of churning ice cream without a freezer are to put the ingredients in a zip top bag and then place that bag in a larger zip top bag with ice in it. Shake it, or play a game of toss with a friend or the kids, tossing back and forth and adding ice (and draining off the water as the ice melts) until your ice cream has set up.
What a great way to maintain your health and still enjoy a wonderful treat!
Another easy way of making ice cream is to use frozen fruit, whey powder, coconut milk and flavorings like instant pudding or extracts. Low fat cottage cheese or reduced-fat mascarpone cheese or a combination of those with Greek yogurt will give you a creamy-smooth ice cream when made in a blender.
If you don’t want to make your own whey protein ice cream but would love to have the treat anyway, there are great products out there you can buy at any nutrition store or health food store that has a freezer.
Some whey ice creams are made with cream and some with milk, so watch the fat content. They are available in cups, quarts, sandwiches, bars, just about any way you can find ordinary ice cream.
