There have been studies done to prove or disprove the idea of whey protein being able to cause kidney stones, so what’s the truth?
What is Whey Protein?
First you should know what whey protein actually is and what it is supposed to be used for. Whey protein is normally found in a powder form and is used as a daily protein supplement. That is not all that it can be used for though.
It is also used sometimes to improve athletic performance, to supplement milk-based infant formulas, and also for replacing glutathione in HIV patients. Whey protein is a mixture of beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, bovine serum albumin, and immunoglobins.
There seems to be many benefits to consuming whey protein including: losing weight, anti-cancer properties, lower cholesterol, asthma, and lowering blood pressure which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Whey protein is loved by many, and with all of those amazing benefits it can offer it really doesn’t seem so bad.
What are Possible Side Effects of Whey Protein?
When used in moderation, whey protein is said to be healthy and unlikely to cause any adverse effects. However, if you are consuming whey protein in larger amounts than what is recommended, there are possible negative side effects.
These side effects include: stomach pain, cramps, reduced appetite, nausea, headache and fatigue.
Those are not such terrible side effects when you compare them to more serious possible side effects such as kidney stones. Kidney stones is never listed as a possible side effect at all.
What Causes Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones are formed when components of urine such as calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and phosphorus levels rise and end up out of balance. These particles can harden when they become overly concentrated and they will form tiny stones or mineral deposits.
It is then possible for those stones to block the natural flow of liquid which can cause damage or infections. If you are consuming something such as whey protein, if in large amounts, then the kidneys can become overworked which in turn makes them less effective at clearing out the body of byproducts from the breakdown of protein.
Of course this is only possible if you are consuming much more whey protein than what is recommended. If you are consuming it in the recommended dosage then there is no risk of kidney stones for the average person.
Whey Protein Kidney Stones – Who is at Risk?
If you already have problems with your body easily forming kidney stones, then adding extra whey protein to your diet is only going to make matters worse for you.
If you have a family history of kidney stones, obesity, or repeated urinary tract infections, then you should not be adding any type of extra protein into your diet.
If none of these apply to you, then you should have no problem with adding whey protein to your diet. As long as you are drinking enough water and also adding fiber to your diet then protein should not cause any unexpected health issues.
It is recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water each day, and you are also recommended to add 25 mg of fiber to your diet. Although there are reports that say whey protein can cause kidney stones, the truth is that it doesn’t.
Most likely anyone who ends up with them was already on the path to being effected by them. Whey protein is a great product which helps so many people with so many problems that seem impossible to fix.
